Welcome to Night Vale

My largest and most extravagant piece this semester, "Welcome to Night Vale" is a map of said town. Night Vale is a town in the podcast "Welcome to Night Vale," and because it's entirely an audio series, the listener is free to come up with their own interpretation of the locations in the town based on the vocal descriptions, which is what I did.

I won't lie; this thing took forever. It's pen on tagboard and is several feet tall. I designed the entire town and the border as well, which I made using a handmade stencil. 

Starting on the top we have the Night Vale Community Radio Station. On the left is the Glow Cloud, and on the right is a helicopter (what color? we will never know), a pyramid (probably the one that spouted off all that philosophical stuff), a "To Desert Bluffs" sign, and an old oak door to a desert otherworld :(  . Moving down the lefthand side, we have the post office, Tourniquet, the Whispering Forest, the dog park, Mission Grove Park, Carlos' lab, the Arby's (complete with lights, sign, parking lot, and an Erica), Telly's barber shop, the Public Library (outside which is Tamika Flynn and her army of teenage rebels) and the Museum of Forbidden Technology. Moving down from the right side is City Hall, Big Rico's (complete with Wheat & Wheat By-Products Speakeasy and hooded figure), the Night Vale Harbor and Waterfront Recreation Area, the Desert Flower Bowling Alley and Arcade Fun Complex, Radon Canyon (the view is literally breathtaking!), the Moonlite All Nite Diner, and Dark Owl Records.

Face Study Part 2: Clara

Following up on Cas, I switched to doing Clara in acrylic on canvas. She's the current companion on Doctor Who. I did alright with her, but the resemblance isn't nearly as good as Cas's. The nose is by far the best part, and I don't think I went dark enough around the eyes and shadowed side of the face. *sigh* Alas.

I've had art class all semester and am just getting the chance to take pictures of my art from that period, so I'll be posting it here in chronological order over the next couple weeks.

This was my first piece, a drawing of Cas from Supernatural that I did for my sister for Christmas ;). I used it primarily as a face study and to help me improve in that area.

Night Vale Jack-O-Lantern

For Halloween this year I decided to go with a Night Vale theme, Night Vale being my latest obsession interest. Night Vale is a podcast in the form of a radio broadcast, so I carved the pumpkin and then painted on the radio station (Night Vale Community Radio). 

Captain Jack Harkness Digital Art

So I was playing around with some digital sketches and then I started coloring this one and then I felt compelled to finish it. It's Captain Jack Harkness, a character on Doctor Who and the main character of the DW spin-off Torchwood. His face isn't quite right, but it's pretty darn close and I'm still working on faces in general. His face took about 4 hours and the rest of him was like an hour and a half. Worked off a photo.

One Hundred Percent Rebel Time Lord

Here's another digital piece, this time featuring Twelve and some Gallifreyan. The Gallifreyan says: "No frills, no scarf, no messing. Just 100%" and the bottom continues the quote with "Rebel Time Lord." Corel Photo-Paint X5. Took a little less than an hour.

A Daft Old Man Who Stole A Box

There's a Doctor Who quote that goes "[I was] a daft old man who stole a box and ran away. Silly me." It's from the Chameleon Circuit song 'Silence and the End of All Things' but is also a very close quote with the Doctor Who episode 'The Big Bang.' Eleven says it, referring to the theft of his TARDIS and his flight from Gallifrey as the First Doctor. After 'The Day of the Doctor' aired I realized the quote applied to John Hurt's War Doctor as well, as he stole the Moment (in the guise of a box) and ran off to a distant planet to use it. So here's a bit of fan art I made:

Peladon Digital Art

So it's been a while and I finally finished my drawing of King Peladon! He's a secondary character in the Classic Doctor Who episode "The Curse of Peladon." The Doctor (Three) arrives on the planet Peladon with his companion Jo, and, with the help of King Peladon, prevents a rebel overthrow and allows Peladon (the planet) to be admitted to the Galactic Federation. King Peladon is played by the excellent David Troughton (son of Patrick Troughton).

The piece is done digitally, using Corel Photo-Paint X5. It took several months of on-and-off work, but I think it turned out alright! Most of it was done using a stylus and tablet, and there's some minor textures digitally added to the background. There's also a bit of VanGogh style in the torches. :-)

Doctor Who Playing Cards

You may remember that a while ago I posted this, a sneak preview of my Doctor Who playing cards, which I have now finished! The four suits are: the sonic screwdriver (10's), the Seal of Rassilon, a dalek, and a weeping angel. 4 colors: blue, green, red, and orange. Face cards have an extra gold stripe denoting them as such. The Jokers are the first and last faces of the Master (Roger Delgado and John Simm, respectively). The back of the cards sport the TARDIS, the Seal of Rassilon, and Gallifreyan text (using the method here). The Gallifreyan reads (in various places) "bad wolf" "bigger on the inside" "gallifrey" and "kasterborous".

As an update (2-15), I have now made a second set of cards. Both sets feature Doctors One through Eleven on cards Ace-Jack. The original set, however, features Idris as the Queen and the Brigadier as the King, and the new set has Twelve (Capaldi) on the Queen and the TARDIS on the King. Otherwise the sets are identical. The original set is now discontinued.

There have been inquiries as to whether I am selling decks of cards, and I am! A deck (Set 2, with the slight modification of Michelle Gomez on the second Joker instead of John Simm, as the newest Master/Missy) is $12 + shipping. Percepliquis Painting

So today I just finished my Percepliquis painting (it took me 5 days). Percepliquis is an ancient, ruined, underground and half-submerged city in the book "The Heir of Novron" (aka "Wintertide" & "Percepliquis") by the brilliant Michael J. Sullivan. The books are well worth a read, and I would strongly recommend them to anyone into medieval, Lord-of-the-Rings-style, thief-and-con-man fantasy. You can learn more at Sullivan's website. The painting is an original composition, drawing strongly on the description of the city and its surroundings as detailed in the book. Acrylic on canvas:

At least this is an improvement over my last Percepliquis drawing. *shudders*. 

Heir of Novron fan art

SPOILERS!

These are some doodles I made of the climax of Michael J. Sullivan's book Percepliquis/Heir of Novron. The books are very well written and a fun read (medieval fantasy), though little-known, and I would encourage anyone who likes that genre to read them. They're called the Riyria Revelations.

The doodles were digitally colored, something I've never done before, so I apologize if they aren't up to par, though I do plan to do more in that area. Enjoy! :)
