Wake Me Up // Multi-Fandom

So I had a bit of free time and finished up this video I've been working on for a while!
It's a multi-fandom video to Avicii's "Wake Me Up." Fandoms include: Doctor Who, Supernatural, Sherlock, Merlin, Star Trek, Harry Potter, the Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Les Miserables, the Avengers, and the Hunger Games.

Face Study Part 2: Clara

Following up on Cas, I switched to doing Clara in acrylic on canvas. She's the current companion on Doctor Who. I did alright with her, but the resemblance isn't nearly as good as Cas's. The nose is by far the best part, and I don't think I went dark enough around the eyes and shadowed side of the face. *sigh* Alas.

Captain Jack Harkness Digital Art

So I was playing around with some digital sketches and then I started coloring this one and then I felt compelled to finish it. It's Captain Jack Harkness, a character on Doctor Who and the main character of the DW spin-off Torchwood. His face isn't quite right, but it's pretty darn close and I'm still working on faces in general. His face took about 4 hours and the rest of him was like an hour and a half. Worked off a photo.

One Hundred Percent Rebel Time Lord

Here's another digital piece, this time featuring Twelve and some Gallifreyan. The Gallifreyan says: "No frills, no scarf, no messing. Just 100%" and the bottom continues the quote with "Rebel Time Lord." Corel Photo-Paint X5. Took a little less than an hour.

Doctor Who | Dear Maria, Count Me In

Here's a Doctor Who-themed music video I made to the song "Dear Maria, Count Me In" by All Time Low. In the first half, the Doctor is Amy's Maria, and in the second half, Amy is Rory's.

A Daft Old Man Who Stole A Box

There's a Doctor Who quote that goes "[I was] a daft old man who stole a box and ran away. Silly me." It's from the Chameleon Circuit song 'Silence and the End of All Things' but is also a very close quote with the Doctor Who episode 'The Big Bang.' Eleven says it, referring to the theft of his TARDIS and his flight from Gallifrey as the First Doctor. After 'The Day of the Doctor' aired I realized the quote applied to John Hurt's War Doctor as well, as he stole the Moment (in the guise of a box) and ran off to a distant planet to use it. So here's a bit of fan art I made:

Doctor Who Big Finish Audios Infographic

So I'm working on listening to a bunch of Big Finish Doctor Who audio stories-- basically the original actors from the classic Doctor Who years recording audio books of new adventures. There's something called a "main range," which is the "original" and central series of audios, though they're not really consecutive. There's also a huge amount of spin-offs, some quite long (Bernice Summerfield) and others short (I, Davros). It took me quite a time reading the wikipedia page on the subject to figure out what was going on, so I decided to make a visual guide to the adventures. The information is off of wikipedia, but simplified and hopefully more understandable. Adventures are color-coded by Doctor. All the little graphics are mine, the main background image is not. If anyone finds any mistakes or errors in typing or labeling, please point them out in the comments so I can fix them. :-)

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Food

So for the 50th Anniversary of "Doctor Who" I went the whole nine yards and made a pasta salad and tons of desserts!

Firstly, the salad is a bowtie pasta salad from here. I used provolone cheese, green peppers, pepperoni, cherry tomato halves, and zesty Italian dressing.

Next I made some standard cut-out cookies. There's the eleven doctors, John Hurt's Doctor, and a guess at what Twelve's costume will look like. As you can see, John Hurt's Doctor was wounded in the Time War after falling from the counter :-(. I'm aware some of the details are off: Ten should have converse and the colors on Six's coat are wrong, but it was getting late and I was tired.

I also made some Seal of Rassilon cookies, which are harder to frost than they look.

Easier to make are the Gallifreyan writing cookies, which say "Fifty Years of Doctor Who" in Gallifreyan, using the method here.

Then I made some chocolate cupcakes. The Dalek designs and a printable pdf are available here.

I frosted the rest of the cupcakes and made them the space-time vortex. I put some half chocolate TARDISes on the tops of some of them.

The chocolate TARDISes and Daleks I made using the awesome mold you can buy here.

I also made some ice cubes from the same tray. EX-TER-MIN-ATE!

And of course there's fish fingers and custard. The custard is just regular vanilla pudding, but the fish fingers are an ingenious cookie recipe available here.

Peladon Digital Art

So it's been a while and I finally finished my drawing of King Peladon! He's a secondary character in the Classic Doctor Who episode "The Curse of Peladon." The Doctor (Three) arrives on the planet Peladon with his companion Jo, and, with the help of King Peladon, prevents a rebel overthrow and allows Peladon (the planet) to be admitted to the Galactic Federation. King Peladon is played by the excellent David Troughton (son of Patrick Troughton).
The piece is done digitally, using Corel Photo-Paint X5. It took several months of on-and-off work, but I think it turned out alright! Most of it was done using a stylus and tablet, and there's some minor textures digitally added to the background. There's also a bit of VanGogh style in the torches. :-)

Doctor Who Playing Cards

**Currently for sale on etsy here**

You may remember that a while ago I posted this, a sneak preview of my Doctor Who playing cards, which I have now finished! The four suits are: the sonic screwdriver (10's), the Seal of Rassilon, a dalek, and a weeping angel. 4 colors: blue, green, red, and orange. Face cards have an extra gold stripe denoting them as such. The Jokers are the first and last faces of the Master (Roger Delgado and John Simm, respectively). The back of the cards sport the TARDIS, the Seal of Rassilon, and Gallifreyan text (using the method here). The Gallifreyan reads (in various places) "bad wolf" "bigger on the inside" "gallifrey" and "kasterborous".

As an update (2-15), I have now made a second set of cards. Both sets feature Doctors One through Eleven on cards Ace-Jack. The original set, however, features Idris as the Queen and the Brigadier as the King, and the new set has Twelve (Capaldi) on the Queen and the TARDIS on the King. Otherwise the sets are identical. The original set is now discontinued.

Set 1 (2013) (discontinued):

Set 2 (2014):

There have been inquiries as to whether I am selling decks of cards, and I am! A deck (Set 2, with the slight modification of Michelle Gomez on the second Joker instead of John Simm, as the newest Master/Missy) is $12 + shipping. The decks are professionally printed, and each comes shrink-wrapped and with Jokers and a matching box. I am currently selling them through etsy here, and thanks for the interest! :-)

How To Make a Caramel-Filled Chocolate TARDIS

For the 49th Anniversary of "Doctor Who", I made myself a caramel-filled chocolate TARDIS. Here's how I did it. First off you'll need a mold. I already had one that I'd made the previous year, but here's the gist of it: Choose the design of your TARDIS, and lay it out on the computer in layers inversely, print it off, trace the shapes on cardboard, and cut them out. My TARDIS's about 10 or 11 inches high. The mold itself will take several days' time to do, and cutting cardboard is not pretty. At any rate, glue it all together and you should get something like this:

I made a chocolate TARDIS last year for my sister for Christmas, so I'd already made my mold. One of the problems I'd had last year was getting the hardened chocolate out of the mold. On closer inspection, the vertical edges of the mold were ) shaped, which caused the chocolate to crack and resist leaving the mold. To try to fix this, I cut and taped pieces of paper down and around, so that I could smooth out the edges without permanently altering my mold.

Last year I'd lined the mold with plastic wrap; the plastic tore easily and wanted to hug the chocolate more than the mold. This time I used press-n-seal plastic wrap/cling wrap. With the slightly sticky side down, it stayed in the mold where I wanted it.

I used a bone folder (tool pictured below) to work the plastic into the edges and corners, trying to smooth out the wrinkles as best I could, and hoping that any that showed up in the final chocolate would simply look like wood grain. Fingernails or the smooth edge of a plastic ruler or such would substitute well for the bone folder.

For the chocolate I used 14 oz. of Hersey's chocolate, or the equivalent of two giant Hersey's bars. For the caramel I was initially going to use hard caramel squares; however, this proved problematic (more on that later). Instead I used ice cream topping. We didn't have any caramel on hand at the time, since it was a short-notice change, so I used butterscotch instead.

I melted the chocolate in the microwave, then used a carefully cleaned paint brush to paint the entire mold with melted chocolate. Make sure this layer is thick and you can't see the mold through it.

Freeze it.

This is what happens when you use hard caramels. After microwaving it to a burned liquid, it hardened rapidly and then turned into a nasty rock, not suitable for pouring or putting in a chocolate bar.

Take the ice cream topper caramel and squirt it into a square in the center of the TARDIS, however much you want in it. Freezing it won't cause the liquid caramel to solidify, so melt the rest of your chocolate and pour it over, bringing the chocolate up to the edge of the mold and smoothing it out. Freeze.

Now it's time to prize the chocolate from the mold. This is tricky, and you need to make sure the chocolate is fully frozen first. I got mine out with a combination of banging, shouting, and prying. I pulled the paper out from the edges of the mold to give the chocolate more wiggle room to work out. The light snapped off the top of mine, and then it cracked horizontally. :-( If you want to, you can melt a bit more chocolate and try to "glue" the pieces back together, or melt some white chocolate and do detail work: write "Police Box" on the top, shade in the light, etc.

It's not the best TARDIS in the world, and a bit battered-looking (the time vortex is a hostile place), but it's full of caramelly goodness. The mold lived to make TARDISes another day!
